The hotbed of the Whiskey Rebellion, we’re calling Pittsburgh and surrounding Western Pennsylvania The Rebellion Region.Today, Pittsburgh is known for innovation and technology, and a thriving food and drink scene. It’s fitting that one of the country’s most innovation-focused distilleries, Wigle Whiskey, named for a leading Whiskey Rebel, is from the Pittsburgh region.
Pittsburgh boasts 90 unique neighborhoods with diverse and exciting arts programming ranging from distinguished contemporary art and experimental visual arts to eclectic theater, as well as the rich sports history of the City of Champions. Nearby Washington County, the heart of the Rebellion, is home to the annual Whiskey Rebellion Festival each July, as well as Liberty Pole craft distillery, which also pays homage to the Rebellion.
Just east of Pittsburgh, Laurel Highlands is a four-season destination and an outdoorsman’s dream. This mountainous region is home to fall festivals, historic sites and attractions, including the West Overton Village and Museum, a working distillery in what was once the largest distillery in the country. About an hour from Laurel Highlands and near the Maryland state line, visitors and locals alike can experience the historic splendor of Bedford, PA and enjoy walking tours, museums and railroads sure to transport you back to a time of revolution.
