Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, whiskey, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
3. Transfer the apple mixture into a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish or a similar-sized ovenproof dish, spreading it out evenly.
4. In another mixing bowl, prepare the crisp topping. Combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Mix well.
5. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
6. Stir in the whiskey and chopped nuts (if using).
7. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling.
8. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
9. Remove the whiskey apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
10. Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy your cozy fall dessert with a hint of whiskey flavor!
